Lazaro "Laz" Chavez served the Las Vegas community for more than 33 years with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department — starting as a patrol officer in 1989 and rising to become Assistant Sheriff under then-Sheriff Joe Lombardo.
He served as a SWAT crisis negotiator, narcotics detective, robbery detective, and supervisor of the Criminal Intelligence Section before advancing to deputy chief, and finally Assistant Sheriff overseeing Homeland Security, Investigative Services, Support, and Business & Technology.
Laz worked with the Department of Homeland Security to deport the worst-of-the-worst from Las Vegas. He fought against the Mexican cartels and seized record amounts of drugs, including a $1 million black tar heroin and $16 million in cocaine bust.
